Edwards announces $6 million loan guarantee to increase affordable housing supply in Haywood County
U.S. Congressman Chuck Edwards (NC-11) announced that after he advocated for Mountain Housing Opportunities, Inc’s Community Development Block Grant – Disaster Recovery application, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Rural Development has approved more than $6 million for a project to build additional affordable housing units in Haywood County.
Edwards wrote a letter to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development in support of Mountain Housing Opportunities, Inc’s Community Block Grant - Disaster Recovery grant application entitled, “Balsam Edge Apartments,” to increase the affordable housing supply in rural Western North Carolina.
“More affordable housing options are much needed in North Carolina’s 11th District, especially after Hurricane Helene has devastated homes in our mountains. This award is an important investment in our communities and will tangibly help citizens who were displaced by the storm or just in need of affordable housing amid surging housing costs,”said Edwards. “Mountain Housing Opportunities has a proven track record of developing quality, affordable housing for citizens across Western North Carolina, and I look forward to seeing the development of this project that will benefit Haywood County citizens.”
The award will be used to assist in the construction of Balsam Edge, a family and multi-family housing complex in Waynesville, N.C. This project has a total of 22 one-bedroom, 42 two-bedroom, and 20 three-bedroom units.
